DID YOU KNOW?
Children with autism can be classified into one of four sensory subgroups based on how they respond to the 38-item Short Sensory Profile. These subgroups include: (1) Children with acute taste and smell sensitivity who may have overactive nervous symptoms, giving their perceptions a heightened intensity. (2) Children who struggle with posture and energy, who may have difficulty integrating information from proprioception (the body’s feedback to the brain about its position in space). (3) Children with symptoms from groups 1 and 2. (4) Children who have no sensory issues. The categories may help researchers understand the neural underpinnings of sensory differences and the therapies useful for treating each group.
